Mitutoyo is deeply committed to sustainability, aligning environmental responsibility with its core mission of precision and innovation.

On a global scale, Mitutoyo has pledged to cut CO₂ emissions by 50% by 2030 (compared to 2018 levels) and achieve ISO14001 certification across the organization as part of its roadmap to carbon neutrality by 2050.

This strategy – known as the “Mitutoyo Green Challenge” – includes ambitious actions within climate protection, resource reuse, and environmentally conscious manufacturing. At its production facilities in Japan, Mitutoyo already operates using 100% CO₂-free energy sources, such as hydropower at the Utsunomiya and Kochi sites. Solar panels have been installed at the Miyazaki plant, and outdated oil-fired boilers have been replaced with energy-efficient cooling systems.

Mitutoyo also develops products and supply chains with environmental care in mind. Product development focuses on energy efficiency and material recyclability – including the use of LED lighting, reduced component complexity, and recyclable materials. All electric tools and measuring instruments comply with directives such as RoHS, which limit the use of hazardous substances.

In its procurement policy, Mitutoyo prioritizes green suppliers. Environmental and social responsibility – including respect for human rights and conflict-free sourcing – are core requirements for all suppliers.

Mitutoyo’s environmentally friendly production sites reflect this philosophy. All facilities operate under a certified ISO14001 environmental management system. At the Japanese plants, for example, LED lighting and resource recycling are part of daily operations to minimize waste and energy use.

Looking ahead, Mitutoyo sees sustainability not just as a responsibility, but as a shared opportunity. As the next generation of skilled experts emerges, initiatives like EuroSkills offer a unique space to exchange ideas and drive innovation. By investing in both green technologies and young talents, Mitutoyo contributes to shaping a future where precision and sustainability go hand in hand.

More info about Mitutoyo’s sustainability focus can be found at https://mitutoyo-esrs.verso.de/home?locale=en

By equipping manufacturers with high-precision measuring instruments for quality control, Mitutoyo helps to keep production within specified tolerances. The result? Fewer items ending up in the trash, reduced scrap, and a measurable impact on our planet. It’s sustainability through precision.”

An unconventional yet eco-friendly collaboration is turning waste into value: 500 used banners from the Ice Hockey World Championship in Herning are now being transformed into volunteer bags for EuroSkills Herning 2025.

When EuroSkills Herning 2025 takes place at MCH Messecenter Herning from 10–12 September, it will not only be the European Championship for 597 young skilled professionals from across the continent. It will also stand as a concrete example of how large-scale events can take responsibility for the environment.

In partnership with MCH, the Ice Hockey World Championship, and local business Heartbeat Studio, EuroSkills Herning 2025 is reusing colourful banners from the recent ice hockey tournament – turning them into 500 unique and durable bags for use by the event’s volunteers.

“Each bag serves not just a practical function but also tells a story of collaboration, reuse, and environmental awareness. It’s a tangible example of how major events can think differently and take responsibility,” says Henrik Kjeldsen, Director of EuroSkills Herning 2025.

The bags are being produced locally by Heartbeat Studio, based in Herning/Bording, using materials donated by MCH and the Ice Hockey World Championship organisers. The project represents a fusion of sustainable innovation and local engagement.

The initiative reflects both EuroSkills Herning 2025’s green values and MCH’s commitment to prolonging the life of materials and reducing waste through creative solutions.

“Instead of letting materials go to waste, we find new ways to use them – to benefit both the environment and the communities we build around our events,” says Maria Galmstrup, Sustainability Manager at MCH A/S.

The bags will be in use during the event itself, but they will also stand as lasting symbols of this green collaboration – and of how circular economy thinking can make a real difference when sustainability is integrated from the very beginning.

When EuroSkills Herning 2025 takes place in September, it will do so with a strong focus on sustainability. With the new sustainable initiative, LOOP, material waste from the competitions will be reduced, and waste will be handled more responsibly before, during, and after the event.

The Volunteer ‘Loopers’

In addition to recycling and donating materials from the competitions, the LOOP project also actively involves vocational school students from across the country. These students will be recruited as ‘Loopers’ and will go through both a digital learning program and a physical workshop on waste sorting during the event’s setup days. Here, they will gain knowledge and skills in sustainability and proper waste management.

The project is made possible thanks to a grant of DKK 3.38 million from the philanthropic association Realdania, ensuring that EuroSkills Herning 2025 sets new standards for sustainable events. This makes Realdania an official EuroSkills 2025 Event Partner.

Project Manager at Realdania, Vera Noldus, states:

“The skilled trades play a crucial role in the green transition, and it is therefore important for us to support a movement where circularity becomes the norm. With LOOP, EuroSkills Herning 2025 can not only reduce its resource consumption but also inspire participants, contributors, and visitors to rethink material consumption and waste management.”

Circular Economy, Afterlife, and Sustainable Procurement Lists

EuroSkills Herning 2025 recognizes the climate challenges the world faces. Previous Skills events have not placed much focus on the ‘afterlife’ of materials and equipment, but with LOOP, an important step is taken towards a more circular economy.

CEO of EuroSkills 2025, Henrik Kjeldsen, states:

“The LOOP project is an obvious initiative that perfectly aligns with the green direction we have chosen with our slogan: ‘Skilled for a greener future’.

We are very pleased that Realdania has made it possible to realize the project, allowing us to promote sustainability and circular economy at EuroSkills Herning 2025.”

LOOP takes action already in the planning phase by reducing and regulating procurement lists in collaboration with the participating European countries. This ensures that materials are purchased in the right quantities and with a strong focus on sustainability and waste reduction.

In fact, all stakeholders at EuroSkills Herning 2025 will be part of this sustainable approach. Competitors, exhibitors, suppliers, and stand staff will be instructed in the LOOP project’s waste management procedures, ensuring that sustainability becomes a collective effort across the event.

Green Inspiration for Future Events

The LOOP project is not just about making EuroSkills Herning 2025 greener – it aims to set a new standard for sustainable events across Europe.

The experiences and evaluations from the project will be passed on to EuroSkills Düsseldorf 2027, SkillsDenmark, and WorldSkillsEurope, enabling them to benefit from the knowledge generated.

Press release issued on April 1, 2025.

Former EU Climate Commissioner Connie Hedegaard is a member of the EuroSkills 2025 board. She and the rest of the board have ambitious plans for EuroSkills 2025 in Herning to be the most sustainable EuroSkills event ever – in more ways than one.

This includes material choices, recycling, waste sorting, circular economy – wherever it’s feasible,” says Connie Hedegaard, adding: “Additionally, we want to show participants and visitors that sustainability is an agenda we take seriously and act upon in Denmark. A Gigantic Display

Connie Hedegaard believes EuroSkills Herning 2025 comes at just the right time, especially now that the Danish Government has declared 2025 as ‘The Year of Vocational Education’: “It’s no secret that we lack skilled professionals; therefore, we also have ambitions to challenge the perception that choosing high school is the only path for young people. We want to inspire, inform, and highlight the many fantastic career opportunities available through vocational education. EuroSkills Herning 2025 will be a gigantic and impressive showcase for these initiatives.”

Connie Hedegaard enthusiastically looks forward to EuroSkills: “I’m very excited about the event and would like to encourage everyone who can visit Herning in September 2025. It’s deeply fascinating to witness the expertise on display at a skills championship – to see the blend of beautifully executed craftsmanship and the use of machines, digital solutions, and 3D printing – it’s so inspiring. I’m always impressed to see young people giving their very best. I can’t help but think that this massive event, which attracts an incredible number of visitors, must help spark greater interest in the many exciting educational pathways that inevitably contribute to driving forward the crucial green transition.”

The Green Transition as a Motivational Factor

The green transition is increasingly influencing young people’s choice of education. A study by EVA – Denmark’s Evaluation Institute – shows that for 15% of first-year students, the desire to work with the green transition was the decisive factor in their choice of education. Additionally, 24% of the respondents expressed a desire to work with the green transition after completing their education. In other words, the green transition and the opportunity to contribute to it are direct motivational factors for young people choosing their education.

According to EVA’s data, vocational education programs should be seeing increased enrolment. However, that’s not the case. Part of the explanation could be that we’re failing to discuss how we practically achieve the goals leading to a greener world – and failing to present the importance of vocational education when talking about the green transition. Connie Hedegaard elaborates: “Many researchers talk about the green transition, but it’s important to remember that it’s the skilled professionals who make it happen.”
